Being on the working group for responsible business for the UK Conservative party has been a real eye opener this week.
This week, our group of six has held numerous consultations for the policy suggestions we are writing up for late May / June 2007 for David Cameron.
It’s been fascinating. Yesterday it was with the socially responsible investment folks and today with a group of companies.
Some real, meaty, useful suggestions came out of it. While many have been critical of our original ideas, they have proved an excellent jumping off point for practical and pragmatic ideas from others.
The final report will be far better than our original ideas, as was intended.
There is a real space for government to act as catalyst for responsible business, and what’s surprising for some, is just how willing companies are to work together and engage in debate on the topic. Although we might need to change the title to “sustainable business”, which seems more in line with where many companies are headed.
