According to the New York Review of Books website, a devastating legal decision has taken place recently:
“…five right-wing Supreme Court justices have now guaranteed that big corporations can spend unlimited funds on political advertising in any political election”, says the article.
What impact might this have? Apparently, that:
“What legislator tempted to vote for health care reform or Obama’s banking reorganization would be indifferent to the prospect that his reelection campaign could be swamped in a tsunami of expensive negative advertising?”.
There may be one chink of light, in that: “…the ruling does not prevent Congress from requiring reasonable disclosures and disclaimers in corporate advertising.”
But this is not great news. The companies mentioned in this Rolling Stone piece recently, may be rubbing their hands at the opportunity this ruling now presents over climate change.
