50 foods for healthier people and a healthier planet

Well done WWF and Knorr (a Unilever brand) for coming up with this. Really helpful reminder of how to combine healthier foods with a healthier planet. Their simple guide is here.

It could have had a little more nuance, by pointing out the supply stats on these foods, and what the potential downsides of everyone increasing their purchase of these foods might mean. Quinoa, for example, is a well-documented example of where a desire for something healthy, does have other impacts.

But it’s well worth reading and saving. It made me think about alternatives to look at when shopping. We do all need reminding that there are so many alternatives to rice and potatoes. Well, I do.

They highlight buckwheat, for example, which seems has fairly secure supply I think, and has one of the highest protein levels (and no gluten, or any wheat) of any grain, up to 18%. I read that it used to be very popular in North America, but was replaced largely by other, less healthy foods by about 1960. One wonders why (‘Pork barrel’ politics perhaps).
